Description: During the last parliamentary elections on 2 February 2005, the EPP member party, the PSD (Social Democratic Party) received 29% of the votes, which corresponds to 75 seats in the 230 seat Parliament. The Party leader, Manuela Ferreira Leite, was elected on 31 May 2008, by general elections in the party. The PSD is the Portuguese party with the most municipalities, and is the Party in government in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. History: The Partido Popular Democrático was founded in May 1974, directly after the revolution. In 1976 the name was changed to Partido Social Democrata. Since its foundation the PSD has been in government several times with Francisco Sá Carneiro, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, José Manuel Durão Barroso and Pedro Santana Lopes. The President of Portugal is now Aníbal Cavaco Silva, former PM, who was elected in January 2006 with the support of the PSD. The PSD joined the EPP in 1996. Share of votes: 1999 - 32,3%; 1995 - 34%; 2002 - 40,15%.
