Description: Founded in 1899. Continuously represented in Parliament and in government in the 1920-ies and the 1930-ies. Following World War II became the main opposition party and organized the resistance against the communist regime. Thousands of members of the party were persecuted and imprisoned by the communists till the 1980-ies. Once again, became the backbone of the anticommunist coalition following the collapse of the regime in 1989. Formed part of the government 1997 - 2001 (as a partner in the Obedineni demokratichni sili / ODS coalition). In Elections 2005 BANU - People's Union continued the tradition of coalition building and gained once again 5 seats in Parliament. Newly introduced legislation in 2006, banning repetition of party names, forced the party to change its name to Agrarian People's Union and to ammend its statutes accordingly. Currently, the Agrarian People's Union and its MPs continue their active role in center-rigt politics in Bulgaria as part of the political movement Napred (forward) in the Bulgarian Parliament.
