Following the presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova on 13 November, the European People’s Party (EPP) President, Joseph Daul, made the following statement: “I would like to congratulate the centre-right, pro-European presidential candidate, Maia Sandu, for obtaining a remarkable result in these elections. Despite the attacks and the dirty campaign methods she was subjected to, Maia Sandu has succeeded, with very few resources, not only to obtain the best election result a pro-European, centre-right party has ever seen before, but also to mobilise the electorate and the diaspora in an unprecedented way. This shows that people’s desire for honest and credible politicians is growing stronger and that change will inevitably happen,” said EPP President Joseph Daul. “The EPP remains deeply concerned about the electoral irregularities of the second round, including denying the constitutional right to vote to Moldovans living abroad. This constituted a gross mishandling and a breach of law and must be looked into by the competent authorities in order to ensure it will not happen again in the future.” “Finally, these elections have proved that when the centre-right parties -- the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM), the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) and the Dignity and Truth Platform (PPDA) -- remain united, their combination represents a major force which can bring hope and change to the country and its people. Now more than ever, these political forces must continue their cooperation ahead of parliamentary elections in 2018 in order to ensure a better future for Moldova's citizens,” concluded the EPP President.
