EPP member parties call for more cooperation within the EU to prevent terrorist attacks; pass resolutions on remembrance of the Holocaust and on the importance of the family

22. January 2016
Over the past two days, the European People’s Party (EPP) gathered delegates from across Europe for a Political Assembly (PA) in Brussels. In light of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the PA discussed in depth, and approved a resolution on, freedom and security in Europe. The PA also approved resolutions on the remembrance of the Holocaust and on the importance of the family. Following the appalling terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month, freedom and security were the primary focus of the PA. The delegates approved a resolution reaffirming the EPP’s commitment to the freedom of expression and honouring the victims of the attacks. The resolution also outlines the EPP’s positions on a series of measures necessary in order to improve security in Europe while protecting our core values. Moreover, a resolution was approved concerning the Holocaust, which calls on the EU institutions and Member States to ensure that the memory of the victims will always be preserved, to condemn those who deny the Holocaust as a historical fact, and to condemn all forms of intolerance, harassment and violence based on ethnicity, race or religion. The PA also discussed and approved a resolution which highlights the crucial role of the family in society. The resolution calls on the EU institutions and EU Member States to encourage European cooperation regarding ideas and practices with positive impacts on the family. Notably, the EPP PA observed a moment of silence in memory of Leo Tindemans, the late EPP Honorary President, who passed away on 26 December 2014. EPP President Joseph Daul hailed Leo Tindemans, who also served as Prime Minister of Belgium and the first President of the EPP, as a great European statesman.
