21. January 2016
The European People's Party (EPP) Political Assembly has concluded a two-day meeting in Oslo at the invitation of Høyre President Erna Solberg.
The Political Assembly voted to accept a new member party from Bulgaria, adopted two new resolutions and featured a debate with Vladimir Milov from the Russian Democratic Choice Party.
The new party, Bulgaria of the Citizens Movement (BCM), was granted full membership yesterday in the presence of its Chairwoman,Meglena Kuneva, who is the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister.
“We are pleased to welcome BCM as an EPP member party. Greater unity between the centre-right parties in Bulgaria will strengthen even more the current government, led by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, to continue with the necessary reforms for the well-being of all Bulgarian citizens,” said EPP President Joseph Daul.
The EPP Political Assembly adopted two resolutions. The first resolution offers solutions for students at risk and asks the European Parliament to support these students through the Erasmus+ programme. The second adopted document, on personalinsolvency, recommends sharing best practices for insolvency arrangements for families encountering financial difficulties.
In addition, the assembly debated the future of the digital economy and current relations with Russia.
In the EPP’s view, the competitiveness of Europe depends on a strong Digital Single Market, with a focus on e-skills. This will bring growth and jobs to the people of Europe. The EPP advocates for more competition in this sector.
The debate on Russia featured Vladimir Milov from the Democratic Choice Party, a Russian opposition leader, as well as EPP Vice President Jacek Saryusz-Wolski. This debate marks the start of a long-term, intensive dialogue between the EPP and the democratic opposition in Russia. The EPP condemned Russia’s hostile and arbitrary decision regarding the sanction list and reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and democratic order in Europe.
The EPP Political Assembly was held for the first time in Norway, at the headquarters of EPP member party Høyre. The EPP was welcomed in Oslo by a number of important Norwegian political leaders:
