The leaders of the European People’s Party (EPP) met today in Brussels ahead of the European Council to discuss the EU-UK negotiations and the migration crisis. Following the meeting, the EPP President Joseph Daul said: “I am confident that we will reach a deal on the future of the United Kingdom in the EU. All sides are showing a strong political will to have an agreement, which is fair to all EU member states and their citizens. Once more, the EPP leaders in the EU institutions and back at home are playing a constructive role to accomplish a positive outcome,” said the EPP President. “We also need a competitive European economy with a strong Eurozone, one that is unimpeded by veto, as stressed in the EPP declaration adopted today. We must also avoid discrimination between Eurozone and non-Eurozone countries. A strong and stable Eurozone is in the interest of all EU member states irrespective of whether the Euro is their currency or not,” continued the EPP President. Migration and the EU-Turkey Joint Action Plan has also been discussed at the EPP summit. “The EU partnership with Turkey is key to securing the Turkish-Greek border and reducing the influx of migrants to Europe. We must ensure that in the next couple of weeks all efforts are made to implement this action plan. Only by securing our external borders will we secure the freedom of movement for all EU citizens. It is clear that the migration crisis is a European challenge which requires a European solution and solidarity among the member states,” said EPP President Joseph Daul. Finally, the EPP leaders have adopted a declaration of support for Fine Gael and Taoiseach Enda Kenny ahead of the general elections in Ireland on 26 February. “The challenges faced by Europe and Ireland require a committed, strong and responsible Irish government. Fine Gael has proved it can deliver and the EPP trusts it will be up to the challenge again,” concluded the EPP President.
