Following an unprecedented motion against the winner of the recent Portuguese elections, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul, made the following statement: “When Pedro Passos Coelho became Prime Minister, Portugal was in a dire situation, which it inherited from the disastrous management of the previous socialist government. The government formed by the EPP member parties PSD and CDS-PP has led Portugal out of the most severe economic crisis in decades. This was recognised by the Portuguese people in the recent election, in which the PSD and CDS-PP were reaffirmed as Portugal’s leading political force. Today’s actions against the winner of the election puts at risk all the efforts made by the Portuguese people during the last few years. The left-wing coalition, which includes anti–EU, anti-euro and anti-NATO parties, is not a responsible alternative. It does not offer a programme for sustainable economic growth. It places petty politics above the interest of the Portuguese citizens. The left-wing coalition is a mirage and is making false promises to the Portuguese people. The sustainability of an alliance of parties with such contradictory objectives raises concerns. The left-wing coalition has an obligation to the Portuguese people: it must pursue reforms and not throw away the efforts made by the citizens. The future of the Portuguese people and the country's stability are at stake.
