The European People's Party (EPP) congratulated the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) for its victory in the Venezuelan parliamentary elections held this Sunday, 6 December, and welcomes the democratic spirit of the Venezuelan people.
“The results of yesterday's elections represent the triumph of democracy and freedom in Venezuela. Despite the Maduro government's persistent intimidation of the opposition, which included the imprisonment of political leaders, and restrictions on political freedoms, the Democratic Unity Roundtable, integrated by the opposition groups, overcame all difficulties and overwhelmingly won the election,” said EPP Secretary General Antonio López-Istúriz.
“From the EPP we want to congratulate the Venezuelan people for their democratic spirit and for the new phase of change that starts in Venezuela. We believe that a new period of prosperity and freedom lays ahead, with the hope that political prisoners will be released,” continued the EPP Secretary General.
López-Istúriz also emphasised that the European People's Party will continue to support Venezuelans and recalled that the EPP “has always supported and defended a more just, freer and more prosperous Venezuela”.

The Party Platform was developed in EPP Working Group 1 for “European Policy” chaired by EPP President Wilfried MARTENS ?and EPP Vice President Peter HINTZE. The Working Group consists of delegates of EPP member parties who prepared and worked?on this document for more than two years and received input?from the drafting committee as well as senior and young experts.
