The Finance Ministers of the European People’s Party met today ahead of the Eurogroup to discuss the third Greek economic assistance package. Following the meeting, the EPP President Joseph Daul said: “Prime Minister Tsipras has finally realised that it is only through the undertaking of reforms that Greece will achieve the necessary economic growth. Empty populist talk will not create jobs and bring prosperity to the Greek people.” “The Tsipras government has wasted six months in vain, causing its people hardship and bringing about economic insecurity. It lost momentum and failed to build on the progress achieved by Nea Demokratia which had put the Greek economy on the right path during the past years,” continued the EPP President. “Now it’s time for PM Tsipras to implement what has been agreed upon and reform Greece. While the new programme is extensive and challenging, it is also realistic. Time and again, the EU has shown solidarity to Greece, and this must be met with responsibility by the Greek government,” said the President Daul. “Many countries with a lower GDP per capita, like the Baltic States, have been willing to help. Other EU member states like Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and Cyprus serve as the best example to Greece showing that only by committing to reforms were they able to revive their economies and bring new hope to their people,” concluded the EPP President.
