The Greek people are facing a turning point in the history of their nation. As they reflect this week whether to vote for Greece to stay in the Euro area as part of the upcoming 5 July referendum, Joseph Daul, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP) made the following statements:
“It is outrageous that a country that was on its way to recovery was brought to the brink of collapse by the irresponsible extreme-left Syriza government. The Tsipras government jeopardised not only the efforts and sacrifices of the Greek people but also of the other 18 Euro area member states.”
According to the European Commission forecast, Greece’s economy was estimated to grow 2.9% in 2015 before Tsipras became Prime Minister and reversed the positive trend.
“In my political career I have never seen a Prime Minister of an EU country entirely ignore the destiny and wellbeing of his citizens in order to push forward his political agenda,” the EPP President continued.
“I would like to remind the Greek Prime Minister that all EU leaders and governments were democratically elected and have the legitimacy and an obligation to make use of their citizens’ public money in the best possible way. The unanimous decision of 18 Eurogroup member states clearly shows that they can entrust their taxpayers’ contributions only if the Greek government can prove it is a trustworthy partner.”
“The EPP has always stood by the Greek people and does not imagine a future without Greece in the Euro area. On 5 July, the people of Greece have the chance to put an end to this uncertain situation for their own sake and that of all EU citizens,” said the EPP President Joseph Daul. “It’s the Greek peoples’ right to have a say about their future, and I hope it will be a future where we remain together.”
“I remain confident that the Greek citizens will vote YES next Sunday to continue being part of the Eurozone and receiving European solidarity.”

The EPP Manifesto, also adopted at the 2012 EPP Congress in Bucharest, outlines the basic principles of the Party summarising who we are, what our values are, what challenges are we facing and what vision we have for the future. The Party Platform was developed in EPP Working Group 1 for “European Policy” chaired by EPP President Wilfried MARTENS ?and EPP Vice President Peter HINTZE. The Working Group consists of delegates of EPP member parties who prepared and worked?on this document for more than two years and received input?from the drafting committee as well as senior and young experts.
