Following Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech on Britain's renegotiation at Chatham House today, European People’s Party (EPP) President Joseph Daul and the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber said: “The union we live in today embodies the spirit of responsibility and consensus. While we are ready to continue listening to and accommodating the needs of the British people, the main freedoms on which the EU has been built are not negotiable. The right to freedom of movement for every EU citizen must be respected in the UK, just as other European countries respect the right to freedom of movement for every UK citizen,” said EPP President Daul. “The EPP wants the UK to remain a member of the EU. We stand ready to work together with the British government to find a deal which is acceptable to all sides. We support the points raised by Prime Minister Cameron on the need to increase competitiveness and cut burdens on businesses in the EU, which are already part of the Juncker Commission's programme. Finding an agreement on other points, such as ways to increase the role of national parliaments, should be possible ,” said Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament. https://twitter.com/EPP/status/664058844159590400 However, EPP President Joseph Daul underlined that the EPP remains committed to an ever-closer union as the founding principle upon which the EU was built. “There are points in the UK's demands that are problematic and that should be discussed. In any case, British requests should not hinder the integration paths of other EU Member States. David Cameron cannot expect more than legislative measures and some protocol statements from the European Council,” President Daul and Chairman Weber concluded.
