The European People’s Party (EPP) expresses its grave concern about the alarming developments in Venezuela and strongly condemns the arrest yesterday of the mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma.
"The brazen arrest of Antonio Ledezma is a dangerous and authoritarian provocation by President Nicolas Maduro and offers further proof of the Venezuelan government’s continuing attack on political freedom, civil society and judicial process in the country. Together with the arrest of prominent opposition politician Leopoldo López a year ago – who is still waiting for a proper and fair judicial process – the arrest of Antonio Ledezma yesterday points to a systematic attempt of the Maduro government to stifle opposition.
The EPP calls for the release of Antonio Ledezma, Leopoldo López and the rest of the political prisoners, and joins a wide range of voices in the international community in condemning what are clearly politically motivated abuses of the judicial system. The Maduro government must respect democratic processes and must find solutions to address the growing economic and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, instead of escalating the already-tense political situation and accusing other countries of plotting against it in order to hide behind its inability to improve the situation for the Venezuelan people. The government must also immediately stop the harassment and political persecution of the democratic opposition."
