The European People’s Party (EPP) welcomes the European Commission roadmap for strengthening cooperation between Member States and fully supports all proposed measures to pave the way towards an effective EU Security Union. “The EPP has long advocated the creation of a true and efficient EU Security Union. It is reassuring to see that the European Commission, under the leadership of President Jean-Claude Juncker, is fully committed to tackling terrorist threats and protecting European citizens.”, said EPP President Joseph Daul. “Freedom needs security, and security needs effective cooperation and information exchange. We should move towards common European systems to make sure all relevant law enforcement and intelligence information is promptly shared among European colleagues. This is essential to helping our security services deal with threats". “Preventing and fighting radicalisation must remain our top priority. Our core values, such as the rule of law and criminal justice, are the best weapons for countering radicalisation. We must prevent the spread of terrorist propaganda and hate speech. We must also, however, ensure the coherence with the national security standards of each Member State.”, concluded the EPP President. The EPP also encourages solutions towards establishing stronger connections with North African countries, including exchange programmes for students and researchers as well as initiatives aiming at strengthening civil society, entrepreneurship and investment in the region. Finally, the EPP family remains united with the loved ones of all the victims of these recent tragedies. We welcome the new victims’ European rules (the EU victims' rights directive) which are an enduring testimony to our principles.
