Following the murder of the Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, MEP and Secretary General of the European People’s Party Antonio López-Istúriz made the following statement:
“I am shocked and appalled by the murder of Ján Kuciak and his fiancée. Investigative journalism should never end in death. This is not the European Union we stand for. Our Union is founded on freedom and a plurality of views. The voice of a journalist must not be silenced.
This act of extreme violence is an attack on freedom of expression which cannot not go unanswered. The EPP calls on the Slovakian authorities to shed every light on this unspeakable crime and bring those responsible to justice.
Our thoughts are with the families of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová. Slovakia has lost two citizens; Europe has lost a seeker for the truth.”
EPP vyzýva slovenské úrady, aby vniesli svetlo do tohto nevýslovného zločinu a postavili zodpovedných pred spravodlivosť.
Naše myšlienky sú s rodinami Jána Kuciaka a Martiny Kušnírovej. Slovensko stratilo dvoch občanov, Európa stratila hľadača pravdy. "
