After the passing of former Israeli President and Nobel Laureate Shimon Peres, the President of the European People's Party, Joseph Daul made the following statement: "Today the world has lost one of its greatest peace builders. Shimon Peres was a towering figure in Israeli political life as far as I can remember. He was there at the birth of the Israeli state in 1948 working closely together with the first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion.” Shimon Peres was most known for the Oslo Accords. He was awarded the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize, which he shared with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for their joint efforts to create peace in the Middle East. "Shimon Peres was a voice of reason and moderation in a volatile region. We mourn today his loss with all the Israeli people but also with the people all over the globe who saw in Peres an inspiring figure of reconciliation," added Joseph Daul. "Shimon Peres unfortunately did not live to see peace in the Middle East come true. We owe it to his legacy to continue to do everything in our power to make it a reality," concluded the EPP President.
