EPP Agriculture Ministers, chaired by Sari Essayah, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, gathered today in Luxembourg to exchange views ahead of the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH), focusing on the escalating impact of rising fuel and fertiliser prices on Europe’s farming sector, geopolitical pressures, as well as the future direction of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Ministers also welcomed the new Greek Minister for Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schinas, to the meeting. Ministers stressed the urgency of responding to rising fertiliser and fuel prices linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, with the situation already affecting planting decisions, as farmers reduce sowing areas and postpone investments. In this context, they welcomed the European Commission’s proposed Temporary Crisis Framework for State aid, which would enable Member States to provide swift and targeted support to farmers, facing increasing input costs. There was broad agreement on the need for long-term solutions, including accelerating the transition towards renewable energy in agriculture—particularly biogas production—and improved nutrient recycling, in order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Ministers also held an exchange on post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) proposals. Key concerns include the excessive administrative burden and the need for greater flexibility for Member States, particularly in balancing environmental objectives with food production. On the other hand, Common Agriculture Policy must preserve its common character and coherence across all Member States. Finally, EPP Agriculture Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Europe’s farmers through the current crisis, while advancing a more resilient, sustainable, and less bureaucratic agricultural policy for the future.
