EPP Agriculture Ministers, co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, met today in Luxembourg to review and exchange views on the agenda of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH).
The Co-Chairs welcomed all attending Ministers and extended their warm greetings to Christophe HANSEN, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food.
During the meeting, Ministers discussed key items on the AGRIFISH agenda, including the recently presented European Commission’s Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) simplification package. They welcomed the package which aims to reduce administrative burdens for farmers, ease control mechanisms, and better address the specific needs of rural areas. Further simplification was called for, for example, in terms of the Deforestation Regulation. The Ministers also discussed the Council general approach to the proposed regulation for a European forest monitoring framework.
In addition, the Ministers shared insights into the most pressing challenges facing their national agricultural sectors, discussed the impact of EU trade relations with third countries and the related safeguard mechanisms, and emphasized the importance of adequate financial compensation for affected farmers.
They underlined the strategic importance of agriculture in ensuring food security and overall stability across the EU. In this context, they stressed that the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) must guarantee a strong and adequate Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget, aligned with current and future challenges, and equipped with a coherent and flexible toolbox to support our European farmers.
