EPP Finance Ministers, chaired by Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity; Implementation and Simplification, Latvia, and Paschal DONOHOE, President of the Eurogroup and Minister of Finance of Ireland, met this morning in Brussels to prepare today’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) agenda. They discussed the current economic situation in the Member States, and then held a policy discussion on the new Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, aimed at strengthening common defence procurement and strategic autonomy. They welcomed the Commission’s proposal and emphasised the importance of accelerating work on this file. The meeting also included a discussion on the Digital Euro, in light of its potential to strengthen the EU’s financial sovereignty and innovation in payment systems. They concluded by exchanging views on the economic and financial impact of Russia’s continuous aggression against Ukraine.
