EPP Finance Ministers, chaired by Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity; Implementation and Simplification, Latvia, and Paschal DONOHOE, President of the Eurogroup and Minister of Finance of Ireland, met this morning in Luxembourg to prepare today’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) agenda.   Ministers started by congratulating Bulgaria on the successful steps validated on the path to the accession to the euro area. Ministers reaffirmed the EPP’s support for deepening Economic and Monetary Union, provided that convergence criteria are fully respected.   Ministers first exchanged views on the current economic developments in the Member States, addressing inflationary pressures, fiscal sustainability, and the need for continued investment in growth-enhancing reforms.   They then focused on improving competitiveness and the European business environment, supporting the Commission’s ongoing work to reduce administrative burdens, modernise the Single Market, and strengthen Europe’s industrial base.   Ministers continued the meeting with an exchange of views on the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, underlining the need for sustained support to Ukraine and further coordination of sanctions.   Finally, EPP ECOFIN Ministers declared their full support for the candidacy of Paschal DONOHOE, to be elected President of Eurogroup for an additional term.
