EPP Finance Ministers, chaired by Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity; Implementation and Simplification, Latvia, met this morning in Brussels to prepare for today’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) agenda. Ministers congratulated Kyriákos PIERRAKÁKIS, Minister for Finance of Greece, for his election as President of Eurogroup the day before. They also paid tribute to the leadership of Paschal DONOHOE, former Minister for Finance of Ireland, in his position as Eurogroup president and chairman of the EPP ECOFIN Ministerial meeting. Ministers welcomed Simon HARRIS, Tánaiste and Minister for Finance of Ireland, who joined the meeting for the first time since taking up his new role. On the European Semester 2026, ministers exchanged on the recently published reports both on the Commission’s alert mechanism, and the excessive deficit procedure. Ministers then focused on the Saving and Investments Union, discussing the market infrastructure and efficient supervision package, as well as the Commission communication and recommendation on pensions. Ministers further underlined the importance of continued progress on the digital euro. Lastly, they reiterated the importance of advancing the Simplification Agenda, in order to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and support economic growth. The meeting concluded with a crucial exchange on the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, with Ministers reaffirming their commitment to support Ukraine as Russia continues its brutal war of aggression.
