EPP Environment Ministers met on 20 October to prepare for the Environment Council of 21 October. The meeting was co-chaired by Sari MULTALA, Finland’s Minister for Climate and the Environment and Wopke HOEKSTRA, EU Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth. The Co-Chairs welcomed Commissioner Jessika ROSWALL, who referred to her ongoing files, among them the European Commission’s Water Resilience Strategy, adopted on 4 June 2025. The Strategy provides a renewed framework for addressing Europe’s growing water challenges — including droughts, floods, pollution, and scarcity resulting from climate change and unsustainable use. Ministers then exchanged views and sought compromise on key priorities for the upcoming Council, in particular on the preparation of COP30 (10–21 November 2025, Belém, Brazil), as well as on the enhancement and finalisation of the EU NDC together with the 2040 target. Ministers also discussed and supported the smooth implementation of ETS2. The EPP group coordinator for environment and climate, MEP Peter LIESE reported on ongoing discussions in the European Parliament. The EPP group supports an ambitious climate target for the 2035 NDC at the upper end of the range, that should be adopted well before the COP30 in Belém. Liese also underlined the importance of aligning climate action with industrial competitiveness and innovation. The meeting reaffirmed the EPP’s strong commitment to pragmatic environmental action, ensuring that climate ambition goes hand in hand with economic competitiveness, job security, affordability for citizens, and energy independence.
