EPP launches Libertas Forum on Europe’s leading role in championing democracy

08. July 2026
On both sides of the Atlantic, we are witnessing political projects that are eroding freedom and democracy. In the current volatile geopolitical context, it is the duty of Europe’s leading political force to defend the principles and values that protect our people, societies and institutions.
For this reason, the EPP will launch the Libertas Forum, which aims to bring together participants from Europe and Ibero America to dialogue and discuss European priorities such as how to defend freedom, liberal democracy, the rule of law, fundamental rights and economic prosperity.
The first edition of the Libertas Forum will take place on 15 and 16 July in Madrid, led by EPP President Manfred Weber and EPP Secretary General Dolors Montserrat with the participation of the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro; the Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and EPP Vice-President, Antonio Tajani; and the President of Spain’s Partido Popular, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
EPP Secretary General Dolors Montserrat said: “At a time when democratic values are increasingly under pressure, we must stand united to defend freedom, the rule of law and our shared principles. The Libertas Forum will be a platform to strengthen cooperation with our partners and to ensure that democracy not only endures but thrives.”
The Libertas Forum will serve as a platform for dialogue and discussions, reinforcing the EPP’s commitment to building resilient democracies and safeguarding freedom.
