EPP Reaffirms Support for Ukraine, Urges Recommitment to Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Standards
The European People’s Party (EPP) reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked and unjust war of aggression. Ukraine’s resistance is rooted in democratic values, human rights and the rule of law, values we fully share and support.
We are deeply concerned by Ukraine’s recent self-inflicted setback to the rule of law and anti-corruption efforts. The controversial bill—rushed through Parliament without consultation and hastily signed by the President despite clear warnings—undermines the independence of key anti-corruption institutions, NABU and SAPO, which the EU and EPP have supported through years of joint effort.
We are concerned that this development reflects a broader pattern—often justified by wartime urgency—that undermines core values vital to Ukraine’s EU integration and international support. Appointments at the Bureau of Economic Security, pressure on media, civil society intimidation, and limits on opposition all contradict Ukraine’s commitments to transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity.
The EPP urges the Ukrainian authorities to:
  • Reaffirm their commitment to EU core values, essential for further integration;
  • Immediately reverse the newly adopted law that undermines the independence of NABU and SAPO;
  • Appoint the Head of the Bureau of Economic Security based on the selection commission’s transparent decision;
  • Respect the independence of anti-corruption institutions in line with Ukraine’s obligations under the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Ukraine Facility, candidate status, and visa-free regime.
Protecting the independence of anti-corruption institutions is vital for Ukraine’s EU path, public trust, and wartime resilience. The EPP remains committed to supporting Ukraine in both its defense against Russian aggression and its adherence to European democratic standards.
