EPP Agriculture Ministers, co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, gathered today in Brussels to exchange views ahead of the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH). Their discussions focused on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the CAP post-2027 proposals, as well as ongoing developments related to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR). Ministers reaffirmed the central role of agriculture and the CAP in safeguarding food security, economic resilience, and vibrant rural communities. They reiterated that adequate financial resources within the next MFF will be essential to preserve the economic viability of farms, ensure fair and stable incomes for farmers, and promote generational renewal in rural areas. Welcoming the recent political agreement to simplify the CAP, they stressed that real simplification must reduce bureaucracy and deliver practical benefits for farmers—less bureaucracy and more time to farm—and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a CAP that is both workable and future-proof. They took note of the  updates by the Commission and the Parliament concerning the efforts to strengthen the role of regions and rural development in the MFF. With EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall present, the Ministers discussed proposals introducing additional simplification and flexibilities to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). They voiced broad support for postponing its application by one year and for simplifying its requirements, underlining that time is of the essence and that swift, workable solutions are needed. The Ministers also exchanged views on the implementation of the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), reiterating concerns over high implementation costs and legal uncertainties.
