EPP Political Assembly gathers in Brussels

Members of the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party gathered in the Committee of the Regions in Brussels on 23 and 24 February. The meeting was chaired by EPP Secretary General Dolors Montserrat.
Meeting on the four-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Assembly reiterated their full support to the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom and a just and lasting peace.
This Assembly featured a high-level panel discussion focusing on the external dimension of migration. The panel brought together Léon Gloden, Minister of Home Affairs (Luxembourg), Tomas Tobé, Member of the European Parliament (Sweden), Gerald Knaus, Chairman of the European Stability Initiative and Hugo Brady, Senior Strategic Advisor, International Centre for Migration Policy Development.
The panellists addressed the growing challenges linked to handling migration and stressed the need for a firm and fair approach – protecting European borders, fighting smugglers and strengthening partnerships with third countries. The panel concluded with a keynote address by Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs & Migration, who highlighted recent progress on the implementation of the Migration Pact and underscored the importance of swiftly completing the Pact.
Participants also adopted a Presidency resolution on migration.
On the second day, discussions turned to the future of Europe’s regions and the Multiannual Financial Framework, bringing together Vincent van Peteghem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Budget (Belgium) and Sari Rautio, Chairwoman of the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions, under the chairmanship of EPP Vice President Siegfried Mureșan. Their interventions reaffirmed the EPP’s commitment to a future-proof budget that delivers for citizens all around Europe, in regions and local communities.
