The Agriculture Ministers of the European People’s Party (EPP), chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry from Finland, met today in Brussels to prepare for the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries (AGRIFISH) Council meeting. The Chairwoman warmly welcomed Alois RAINER, the newly appointed Federal Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Community of Germany. She also extended her greetings to Jessika ROSWALL, Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, and Christophe HANSEN, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food. During the meeting, ministers held an open exchange of views on the challenges that the agricultural sector faces amid the global tensions. They welcomed the simplification packages recently proposed by the European Commission and emphasized the urgent need for further simplification measures. These, they agreed, are essential to ensure food security and competitiveness of the sector, ease the administrative burden on farmers, support generational renewal, and address challenges in rural areas. The ministers then reaffirmed the strategic role of agriculture as a pillar of Europe’s overall security and underlined the necessity of adequate funding in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). They emphasized that delivering on commitments made to European farmers requires sustained financial support and reiterated the EPP’s commitment to taking all necessary actions to enhance the competitiveness of the European agricultural sector. The meeting concluded with a discussion on the future of bioeconomy innovation in the context of the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy, expected to be adopted by the end of 2025. Following the meeting, ministers attended the opening of the Bioeconomy Exhibition at the European Commission headquarters, showcasing 30 innovative bio-based products and solutions that highlight the potential of the circular bioeconomy to drive sustainable growth and resilience.
