EPP Agriculture Ministers, co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, gathered today in Brussels to exchange views on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) ahead of the upcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH).
During the meeting, the Ministers reaffirmed the irreplaceable role of agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in safeguarding food security and sovereignty, ensuring economic resilience and competitiveness, maintaining high standards, supporting environmental sustainability, and preserving the social fabric of rural Europe.
Ministers emphasized that sufficient resources, anchored in a strong European policy, are vital to safeguarding the EU’s strategic interests in food production. Only with adequate funding can the CAP fulfil its original, still valid objectives and secure the future of European agriculture. Ministers also underlined the need to protect farmers’ incomes, with direct payments remaining the cornerstone of stability in the sector, and stressed that easing administrative burden for farmers is a necessity.
They expressed their concerns about the Commission's proposals in this regard, highlighting the importance of pursuing further simplification and tailoring policies more effectively to the specific needs of rural areas. In this context, they also voiced concerns about the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and its impact on farmers, administration, businesses and consumers.
At the upcoming Council meeting, the Commission will present its proposals for the CAP post-2027, and agriculture ministers will have the opportunity to hold a first policy debate on the future of the policy.
