EPP Agriculture Ministers, co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, gathered today in Luxembourg to exchange views on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) on the sidelines of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH). During the meeting, Ministers reaffirmed the vital role of agriculture in Europe’s overall security — including food security, economic resilience, and the social fabric of rural communities. They underlined that adequate financial resources are essential to preserve the economic viability of farms, ensure fair incomes for farmers, and address the pressing challenge of generational renewal across rural areas. They emphasised that direct payments remain the cornerstone of income stability for farmers and that robust and simplified administrative procedures are necessary to reduce the burden on producers and strengthen their competitiveness. They called for targeted and flexible policies that better reflect the diversity and specific challenges of rural regions, ensuring that young farmers have the tools and support needed to remain active and competitive within the EU supply chain. The Ministers took note of the European Commission’s proposals for additional simplifications and flexibilities in implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), aimed at reducing administrative burden for farmers and landowners. They concluded that the timeline is too strict and stressed that further clarity and workable solutions are required.
