EPP Finance Ministers, chaired by Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity; Implementation and Simplification, Latvia, and Vincent VAN PETEGHEM, EPP Vice-President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Budget of Belgium, met this morning in Brussels to prepare for today’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) agenda. “In an increasingly unpredictable world, Europe cannot afford complacency, and the direction is clear: We need to deliver; Europe needs to deliver on innovation, on strategic autonomy, and on economic security. For the EPP, competitiveness is not just a slogan; it is a responsibility”, stated co-chair VAN PETEGHEM in an introduction to the meeting. After having an open discussion on the situation in Greenland, ministers began the meeting with a discussion on the European Semester 2026, underscoring the importance of ensuring sound public finances whilst fostering economic growth and preventing macroeconomic imbalances across the EU. The focus of the meeting then turned to economic recovery in Europe, where ministers shared the forecasts, perspectives, and outlook from their own member states. The meeting concluded with an exchange on the economic and financial impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, during which Ministers reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine as Russia continues its brutal war of aggression.
