The European People’s Party (EPP) leaders met today in Paris, France ahead of the informal meeting of EU heads of state or government. During the EPP summit which was jointly hosted by EPP President Donald Tusk and President of Les Républicains (LR) Christian Jacob, leaders adopted a declaration in solidarity with Ukraine and defending European values. Europe has united to give Ukraine and its people unfaltering support so they can better defend themselves from the Russian invasion. All EU Member States adopted strong sanctions to isolate Vladimir Putin and his regime. Putin’s war crimes cannot be paid for with European money, our sanctions must be firm, tough and consistent with the ultimate aim of ceasing all trade with Russia. The EU must extend sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and those in Belarus who support Putin and bear equal responsibility for the aggression against Ukraine and loss of innocent lives. The raison d’être of the European project is peace, reconciliation and cooperation. Today, Ukrainians defend not only their own country but the whole of Europe and the values we share. It is our moral duty to help them. This is why EPP calls for the EU institutions to work towards granting EU candidate status to Ukraine. Europe must do everything it can to help the Ukrainian people: it is urgent to establish green corridors to allow humanitarian aid to enter and refugees to leave.
