Members of the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party gathered in Brussels on 3 and 4 June. The meeting was chaired by EPP President Manfred WEBER and Secretary General Dolors MONTSERRAT.
During the first day of the gathering, EPP delegates engaged in a fruitful discussion on the objectives of the EPP Party Reform which was adopted during the party’s Congress in Valencia, Spain, in April. President Weber delivered an extensive rollout of the main pillars of the party reform, emphasizing that the EPP has a special responsibility, as EU’s political powerhouse, to defend Europe against the authoritarian wave observed in many EU countries.
Furthermore, President Weber focused on the fact that the EPP should aim to positively influence the EU’s agenda during the current institutional cycle, highlighting the following areas: the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028-2034, the global trade frictions and especially tariffs, the next steps in meeting the EU’s climate goals, the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact with special emphasis on returns of illegal migrants, as well as the challenges in foreign affairs, more specifically the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.
The second day of the Political Assembly featured a panel discussion entitled “A New Trade Policy Order: The EPP Response” which focused on the repercussions that the new US policy under the Trump administration can have on EU-US trade relations and on global trade. The discussion included interventions by Antonio TAJANI, EPP Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, Simon HARRIS, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Jörgen WARBORN, MEP and EPP Group Coordinator in the Committee for International Trade (INTA) in the European parliament and Cora Francisca JUNGBLUTH, Senior Expert on China and Asia-Pacific in the Bertelsmann Stiftung.
