EPP Ministers responsible for Digital Affairs and Telecommunications, co-chaired by Karsten WILDBERGER, Federal Minister for Digitalization and Government Modernization of Germany, and Pablo ARIAS ECHEVERRÍA MEP, EPP Group Coordinator for the IMCO Committee, met this morning in Luxembourg ahead of the TTE (Telecommunications) Council. European Commission Executive Vice-President responsible for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna VIRKKUNEN, was also present.
The meeting marked the launch of the EPP’s new ministerial format dedicated to telecommunications and digital affairs, bringing together ministers and policymakers from across the European People's Party family to discuss Europe’s technological future and strategic priorities in the digital domain.
Participants held an open exchange on the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s digital economy, underlining the need for a more ambitious approach to technological innovation, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and technological sovereignty.
The discussion then focused on the preparation of the TTE Council meeting, with ministers conducting a preliminary assessment of the proposed Tech Sovereignty Package. Participants exchanged views on the package’s objectives and its potential contribution to strengthening Europe’s technological capabilities, reducing strategic dependencies and supporting innovation across the Union.
