The European People’s Party (EPP) leaders met today in Brussels ahead of the European Council. The meeting focused on Ukraine, the Mercosur trade agreement, and the geo-economic situation.
The EPP leaders reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine, from security guarantees to financial reconstruction. Immobilised Russian assets must be used to finance a reparations loan for Ukraine, based on EU solidarity and risk-sharing.
EPP President Manfred Weber reiterated that “all questions of security must be taken by all EU countries together - we must deliver on the long-term financing of Ukraine”.
Concerning Mercosur, the EPP, as the party of farmers, applauds the agreement on safeguards to protect our farmers. At the same time, the EPP is a party that supports trade, and with China in mind, Europe needs new partners. Failing to reach an agreement on Mercosur is therefore not an option at this moment in time.
The meeting also addressed the geo-economic situation and the need for the European Union to be more assertive and reduce strategic dependencies to safeguard Europe’s economic security.
