The Political Assembly of the European People's Party (EPP) discussed security, migration, and re-elected the Deputy Secretary Generals on 10-11 December in Brussels. "Migration is a complex challenge with different dimensions. We need to reinforce the external borders of the European Union while the Member States need to take their responsibilities. Frontex capabilities must be strengthened and the hotspots facilities must become more efficient. The EPP believes that we need a new European Asylum System in which asylum requests shall be made only at an external border of the EU or outside the EU, and not within the EU as it is currently the case. This will enable us to help more efficiently the people in need who are fleeing war-torn countries,” said the EPP President Joseph Daul. The discussion on migration among EPP members parties revolved around the resolution adopted at the EPP Congress last October. "There is no causality link between terrorism and the challenges brought by the unprecedented migration fluxes. The extremes simplify complex issues, making misleading shortcuts. Refugees are also victims of terrorism themselves," added the EPP President "The security of the European people is our first priority. Yesterday, the Passenger Name Record, for which the EPP advocated so long for, was finally adopted in the European Parliament and will help tracking down terrorists and people who are defying our values. It illustrates our determination to act swiftly. We need to be able to observe the movements of the people having links with terrorists," concluded Joseph Daul. The EPP Political Assembly was reunited for the first time since the attacks in Paris. On this occasion, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in Paris as well as in other cities in the world. The delegates of the EPP Political Assembly, the strategic organ of the EPP, also re-elected unanimously Christian Kremer and Luc Vandeputte as Deputy Secretary Generals.
