The European People’s Party (EPP) welcomes a consultation on the Pillar of Social Rights and a revision of the Posting of Workers directive proposal presented by EU Commissioner Marianne THYSSEN today. She is also the EPP Vice President who works tirelessly to strengthen the European social model. “As Europe has emerged out of the economic and financial crisis, too many people are still struggling with unemployment. While we had the courage to put bold reforms in place to boost growth and restart our economies across Europe, it is now the time to build a strong European social agenda. One that goes hand in hand with the Social Market Economy as one of the EPP’s main principles, in which competitiveness and social justice complement each other,” said EPP President Joseph DAUL. “The Pillar of Social Rights’ consultation is a good starting point to tackle the roots of social inequalities in Europe. It will be developed in the first instance within the Eurozone, while allowing other EU member states to join in if they want to do so. Our European social model must be sustainable and adapt to the future realities. The EPP will play an active role in creating a fair and inclusive Pillar of Social Rights. We must pay special attention to ensure equal opportunities, fair working conditions, adequate and social protection for EU citizens, especially for young people and women. We wholeheartedly support more social Europe.” “In this sense, the review of the posting of workers directive, which would offer a better salary to temporary workers in the EU, is a good example. In the last five years, the posting of workers has increased by at least 44%, which shows that free movement of services is on the rise and the Pillar on Social Rights is needed. Social dumping must remain in the past and be replaced by equal pay for equal work between workers,” concluded the EPP President.
