The Secretary General of the European People's Party (EPP), Antonio López-Istúriz, concluded a visit to Washington, DC, where he held bilateral meetings with key members of the US Congress, as well as participated in a series of discussions in the framework of the 6th Transatlantic Think Tank Conference organised by the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, the European Ideas Network, the International Republican Institute and the Hudson Institute.
The meetings focused in particular on the state of play on both sides of the Atlantic regarding the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is currently being negotiated by the European Union and the United States. Secretary General López-Istúriz stated: "A strong relationship between the EU and the US is the cornerstone of the EPP's external policy, and TTIP is an important step in strengthening this relationship. I expressed to our American partners the full commitment of the EPP in reaching a fair agreement that upholds European standards."
Other key topics of the meetings included the current situation in Greece, security and defence, and the EU's eastern and southern neighbourhoods, including the issue of migration. "Right now Europe is facing massive challenges, both internally and externally. Some of these are European challenges, but many are much broader. It is vital that the EU and the US cooperate closely to address our common challenges, particularly in areas such as security and defence. I am pleased to see the increasingly central role of the EPP political family in boosting cooperation across the Atlantic--an effort that began with the late EPP President Wilfried Martens, and which is continuing to grow," concluded the Secretary General.
