EPP Secretary General welcomes European Parliament recognition of Guaidó as President of Venezuela

31. January 2019
Following today’s vote by the European Parliament to recognise Juan Guaidó as the interim President of Venezuela in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution, European People's Party (EPP) Secretary General, Antonio López-Istúriz made the following statement: “The European Parliament is now the first European Institution to recognise Juan Guaidó as the interim President of Venezuela. This brings the Venezuelan people closer to freedom, justice, prosperity and respect for human rights. “Now  I hope that the Vice-President of the Commission, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, as well as the EU Member States join this recognition in order to restore democracy. We are convinced that Juan Guaidó is the man to lead Venezuela to fair, transparent and democratic elections.” “This is a real opportunity to stop the political and humanitarian crisis that Venezuelans are suffering under the Maduro regime. The European Union and its allies should show leadership and align with freedom and democracy. It is our moral and political duty. “The arrest of journalists, among them EU nationals, in Caracas last night is one of the latest examples of the Maduro regime’s actions against freedom. “I thank the European Parliament President, EPP Vice President Antonio Tajani for his continuous support for freedom and respect of humans right in Venezuela.”
