The Portuguese people voted yesterday and reconfirmed the coalition of the PSD and CDS-PP, two members of the European People’s Party (EPP), as the leading political force. The PSD and CDS-PP gathered more than 38% of the vote. On this occasion, Joseph Daul, President of the EPP, stated: "I would like to congratulate Pedro Passos Coelho and Paulo Portas, who have led Portugal out of the crisis. Today Portugal is more stable, stronger and better prepared to face its economic challenges," said the EPP President. "The Portuguese people have endured necessary but difficult reforms. Their efforts have not been in vain and should not be undone. The economic recovery is well on its way. In May 2014, Portugal successfully exited the bailout programme. The PSD and CDS-PP have a proven track record of reforms and results. The joint coalition is the best option to build on the current reforms, to consolidate Portugal's economy and to bring prosperity to the Portuguese people," continued President Daul. "Portugal is a good example in the European Union for how to overcome the financial and economic crisis: sensible economic policies deliver results and the right reforms pay off. Portugal also illustrates what leadership by EPP members can achieve. It is about action, responsibility and solidarity in order to offer a better future for European citizens," concluded the EPP President.
