The European People’s Party (EPP) welcomes today’s adoption by the Juncker Commission of the Energy Union Package aimed at providing secure, affordable and sustainable energy for our citizens, while contributing to achieving the EU’s climate and energy goals. EPP President Joseph Daul stated: “The Commission delivers on the promises made by Jean-Claude Juncker as the EPP candidate for President of the European Commission in the 2014 European elections, when he pledged to reform and reorganise Europe’s energy policy in the context of a new European Energy Union. The EPP will champion the creation of a truly common EU energy market focused on putting an end to energy islands and calling for a more efficient use of energy and investment in low-carbon technologies, while preserving Europe’s industrial base through affordable energy prices and stimulating innovation.” Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, chairman of the EPP Energy Ministers Meeting, added that “the EPP will continue to work to create a prosperous, democratic and stable neighbourhood, working with our external partners, notably the United States and the Energy Community, in order to ensure energy security for our partners in Eastern Europe while developing new strategies for the Southern Mediterranean countries. The EU’s external energy policy should be in line with other priorities including the support for democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as economic competitiveness.” President Joseph Daul also welcomed the clear formulation of ambitious EU climate commitments in view of achieving a balanced, globally binding agreement in Paris this year, and he especially thanked EPP Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete for his dedicated work.
