The European People’s Party (EPP) calls on the Maduro government to ensure Venezuela has fair, free and truly democratic elections this Sunday, 6 December.
“As we are closely following the developments in Venezuela, the situation is getting worse as the elections are drawing closer. The EPP denounces the continuous harassment of the Venezuelan opposition, including its leaders Leopoldo López, Daniel Ceballos and Antonio Ledezma. We are particularly shocked by and condemn the murder of one of the opposition members, Luis Manuel Díaz, killed at a campaign rally last week,” said EPP Secretary General Antonio López-Istúriz.
“Intimidation, violence, politically motivated and unjust actions against the opposition undermine democratic values and it’s now up to the Venezuelans to change it. A government that has curtailed political freedoms and brought more poverty to its people must allow for a democratic change,” continued the EPP Secretary General.
“Sunday’s elections are a pivotal time and an opportunity for the people of Venezuela and the future of their country. While we trust Venezuelans will make the right choice, it is now the responsibility of the Maduro government to ensure that these elections will be carried out in full transparency, legitimacy and in keeping with democratic principles, first of which is to respect the result of the vote.”
“The people of Venezuela deserve a better future. The EPP political family will continue campaigning and supporting a free, more just and prosperous Venezuela,” concluded the EPP Secretary General.

The EPP Manifesto, also adopted at the 2012 EPP Congress in Bucharest, outlines the basic principles of the Party summarising who we are, what our values are, what challenges are we facing and what vision we have for the future. The Manifesto was developed in parallel to the EPP Platform document within the EPP Working Group 1 for “European Policy”.
The EPP Platform is the core programme of our party outlining our main values, explaining the challenges our society is facing and presenting our vision for the future of European Union.
The Party Platform was developed in EPP Working Group 1 for “European Policy” chaired by EPP President Wilfried MARTENS ?and EPP Vice President Peter HINTZE. The Working Group consists of delegates of EPP member parties who prepared and worked?on this document for more than two years and received input?from the drafting committee as well as senior and young experts. The document was adopted at the 2012 EPP Congress in Bucharest, thus replacing the Basic Programme of Athens from 1992.
