After the agreement reached at United Nations climate change conference (COP 21) in Paris, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul stated: “Climate change is an imminent threat to the quality of life as we know it. It is not only an environmental challenge but also a security one, as EPP stressed in the party Congress last October.  It will impact people’s access to arable land, food and water, possibly intensifying migration fluxes and increasing the number of conflicts. This is why the EPP hails the COP21 Agreement as vital commitment for our future. The fact that it is a legally binding agreement is a strong signal of every nation’s pledge to fight climate change.  The European Union has been at the forefront of this combat, pursuing the goals of its Roadmap to a low-carbon economy in 2050. But a global challenge calls for a global action. The consensus on keeping global warming to well below the 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C is more than a symbolic milestone. It will prevent further adverse effects of climate change and reduce the scale of adaptation risks, avoiding a disproportionate acceleration of economic damages. https://twitter.com/MAC_europa/status/675744493627383808 To implement successfully this agreement, all nations need to be on board. This implies solidarity between countries and the recognition of historical responsibility. We welcome the set-up of the Financial Mechanism of the Convention, which will ensure a balanced access to financial means for mitigation measures. By reaching this agreement in Paris, the nations took action and responded to the seriousness of this challenge. The EPP fully supports this global commitment that will ensure a sustainable and safe future for the planet and for all of us.
