The EU leaders of the European People’s Party (EPP) met ahead of today's European Council in Brussels. The main agenda topic was the outcome of the UK referendum and its consequences for both the European Union and the United Kingdom. “EPP leaders expect Prime Minister David Cameron to swiftly present a plan for how to implement the outcome of the UK referendum. We understand the complexity of the issue and the fact that the British authorities need additional time to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty in an orderly manner, but the current level of uncertainty is bad for the economy, for financial markets and thus for the British people. It is also important to remember that all the advantages negotiated by Prime Minister Cameron no longer exist”, said EPP President Joseph Daul. “Our top priority is to minimalize the negative effects of the referendum upon the citizens of the remaining 27 Member States as well as those EU citizens living in the UK. Just as European integration was the right answer for achieving peace in Europe 60 years ago, it is also the right answer for the main challenges we are facing now. Together we are much stronger in confronting the threats of our times”, added President Daul. “EPP representatives from all the institutions in the European Union are ready to work closely with the UK and to implement the will of the British people. The UK is, and will remain, our key partner in the fields of security and the economy, although the legal framework for our cooperation will be different in future”, concluded President Daul.
