Today Latvia will begin its six-month term at the helm of the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The President of the European People's Party (EPP), Joseph Daul, welcomed the new Latvian Presidency and stated his full confidence in Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma: “For the next six months, the Presidency of the Council of the EU will be in the able hands of Laimdota Straujuma. The main priorities established for the Latvian Presidency – including the promotion of EU competitiveness and growth, the use of Europe’s digital potential in the EU’s development, and strengthening the EU’s role as a global actor – are very much necessary right now and are also in line with the priorities of the EPP. Since taking office as Prime Minister a year ago, Laimdota Straujuma has done excellent work to keep Latvia on a positive and stable path of economic growth. Her government has continued the impressive work of the previous governments under former Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, who skillfully guided the Latvian economy in the midst of extraordinarily difficult times, restored growth and successfully led the country into the Eurozone at the beginning of 2014. This is an achievement not only for Latvia, but a success story for all of Europe. I have had the pleasure to work with Prime Minister Straujuma – also in the field of agricultural issues – and she has been an engaged and committed member of our EPP family. I am confident that under her leadership, the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU will deliver successful results.’’
