EPP Agriculture Ministers Urge Robust CAP Funding in Upcoming MFF Proposal
EPP Agriculture Ministers, co-chaired by Sari ESSAYAH, Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Konstantinos TSIARAS, Greek Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, gathered today in Brussels to exchange views on the agenda of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH).
In their discussions, Ministers underscored the irreplaceable role of agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in guaranteeing food security, economic resilience and competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and the social fabric of rural Europe. Being the basis for producing European public goods, CAP plays a crucial role in supporting the European citizens and their purchasing power.
Ministers delivered a clear and unified message: "the Common Agricultural Policy must be properly and ambitiously funded in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF)", which the European Commission is set to present on 16 July.
Furthermore, the ministers emphasized that the core CAP legislation must remain as an independent legal framework. It is necessary to provide the farming community and the rural areas clear and predictable perspective for the years to come. Sufficient resources with a strong European policy are essential to safeguard the EU’s strategic interests in terms of food production, being a cornerstone for preparedness and overall security.
Ministers called for a robust, future-proof CAP, backed by strong, stable, and dedicated financing, capable of addressing both long-term priorities as well as emerging crises, and prepared to balance the possible trade policy effects in the agricultural markets. Only with adequate funding, they emphasized, can the CAP deliver on its original, still valid objectives and secure the future of European agriculture.
