EPP President: sacrifices of Greek people shall not be jeopardised, new government shall respect Greece’s commitments; praises reforms of ND under leadership of PM Samaras

22. January 2016
The President of the European People's Party (EPP),Joseph Daul, today made the following statement following the parliamentary elections held yesterday in Greece: "I would like to thank Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and our member party New Democracy (ND) for their work on behalf of all the Greek citizens over the last years. In the midst of extremely difficult times, Prime Minister Samaras was able to implement the necessary reforms to start reactivating the Greek economy and correcting its imbalances. He always worked for the general interest of the country. The achievements of his government and the efforts of all the citizens must not be jeopardised. I call on the new government to fully respect the commitments of Greece with the EU and the international organisations and to assure proper cooperation with all its partners. Only by respecting the commitments will Greece remain a trustworthy partner. This is essential for investment and for the creation of jobs, since investors only invest in an economy which they trust. The EPP will always be with the Greek people, just as we have done throughout the previous years. Solidarity is one of the core values of the EU and the EPP. Greece is an important member of the EU and the Eurozone and we need its cooperation in order to continue making Europe the most secure and prosperous region in the world. Europe will be stronger if we remain united."
