Following Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Greece, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP) Joseph Daul has congratulated EPP member party Nea Demokratia and their President Kyriakos Mitsotakis on their landslide victory and wished them well as they entered government:
“In Sunday’s general elections, the Greek citizens sent a strong message of support to Nea Demokratia to steer the future of Greece and turn a page on populism and the failed Syriza policies. The scale of Nea Demokratia’s victory gives Kyriakos Mitsotakis a strong mandate to drive a real reform agenda that will jolt the Greek economy and ensure each citizen can feel confident about their future.
By prioritising reforms and investments, Nea Demokratia’s clear programme and pragmatic approach will rejuvenate the Greek economy, facilitate job creation and deliver prosperity to all Greek people. Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ proposals to protect the borders and tackle crime show that Nea Demokratia are committed to improving citizens’ safety and security”, said EPP President Daul.
President Daul also emphasised the significance of yesterday’s result for Europe:
“The success of Nea Demokratia is a victory for Greek democracy and a defeat for extreme left and right populism on our continent. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is part of the new generation of European leaders. The Nea Demokratia government will be a reliable European partner and will give the Greek people a strong voice in Europe. The Greek people have placed their trust in Nea Demokratia and I am convinced that they are up to the challenge”, he continued.
“On behalf of the EPP, I would like to congratulate Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nea Demokratia on their electoral success and wish them well as they enter government”, he concluded.
