Following the investiture vote in the Spanish Parliament, Joseph Daul, President of the European People’s Party, congratulated Mariano Rajoy on his re-election as Prime Minister:
“Mariano Rajoy and Partido Popular are putting an end to a period of very damaging political uncertainty and taking the responsible path by forming a government. Mariano Rajoy has been a steady hand during these last ten months: he has proven once more that he has the necessary leadership and authority to carry on Spain’s recovery.
This is not only about the economy; this is about improving the welfare of Spanish citizens. Spain needs a stable government to protect all that has been achieved through the sacrifices of Spanish citizens. Reforms must be continued in order to reduce unemployment, improve education and pensions and fight corruption, as outlined by Mariano Rajoy.
Spain has been paralysed by political deadlock for the past several months. For the sake of the Spanish citizens, we hope that the opposition parties will act in a sensible manner. Spain needs a government which can continue on the pathway to prosperity and which can fulfil its European commitments.”
