The European People’s Party (EPP) welcomes the Circular Economy Package presented by European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen today. “Over the past decades, while Europe excelled at industrialisation and innovation, it exceeded at consuming and using vast amounts of our resources. Every year our waste production surpasses millions of tons, but only a fraction of this is recycled. We have to stop seeing waste as a nuisance and start seeing it as a resource,” said the EPP President Joseph Daul. “We must now build on our earlier progress and put in place a sustainable and well-functioning European market for recycled materials based on the new Circular Economy Package. If we are to stay competitive in Europe, create more jobs, and boost our economies, we must reduce our dependence on imported raw materials and energy. We must start to recycle, re-use, and recover what we dispose of,” continued the EPP President. “We owe it to the small and big businesses, our environment, and our future generations,” concluded President Daul. The EPP has been actively promoting the circular economy by adopting a resolution in October at its Congress in Madrid. The EPP's priorities for a new circular economy proposal include putting in place measures to boost our resource efficiency through market mechanisms. The Circular Economy Package must be realistic, market-oriented, and ensure job creation and growth for businesses.
